We pride ourselves on our determination to reduce the environmental impact of our work, and we continually invest in new technologies and monitoring systems with the aim of ensuring our future operations are kinder to the planet.
As a minimum, we aim to responsibly source our materials, implement comprehensive waste management policies (in line with WRAP protocol), and monitor and control noise levels on specific sites. We operate a comprehensive environmental management system that is accredited to ISO 14001:2004 standards.
A robust waste reduction policy is in place across all Howard Civil Engineering sites which allows us to monitor waste produced on-site and identify any areas for improvement.
Our comprehensive system of reusing materials helps us to minimise the amount of waste produced, and anything that cannot be reused is always separated and recycled where possible.
Howard Civil Engineering operates an ongoing policy of supplanting old vehicles, plant, and machinery with more efficient replacements once they have reached the end of their useful working life.
In 2022, we will be welcoming 19 new NRMM stage 5 engine excavators to our fleet, which will reduce the emission of Oxides of Nitrogen by a whopping 90%.
We aim to reduce the fuel consumption and emissions of our fleet and we are currently using fuel made from hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) on our Gateway 36 site, which we are aiming to roll use of this fuel out across all sites by the end of 2022.
In addition to reducing our fuel use, we understand that we can still do more to help combat the effects of climate change by offsetting our emissions. This is why we have invested in both the Katingan Peatland Reforestation and Conservation Project and the 86 MW Hydro Project in Himachal Pradesh, India.*
In 2021 Howard Civil Engineering also purchased our first eco welfare unit, which will save approximately 2,580 litres of fuel per year, and we are looking forward purchasing more of these in the coming months.
Our determination to be kinder to our plant continues in our head office. All waste generated in our head office is recycled or diverted from landfill, and it is our aim that the building will be completely powered by solar by the end of 2022.
*The Katingan Project seeks to protect and restore 149,800 hectares of peatland ecosystems in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia, in addition to offering sustainable sources of income to local people and tackling global climate change. Elsewhere, in India, the 86 MW Hydro Project uses water as a renewable energy source to generate electricity, which is transmitted to Bajaura substation before being exported to the Northern, Easter, Western and North-Eastern grid.
