The provision of a new traffic signal controlled junction off the busy Bochum Parkway dual carriageway and associated increased capacity to an adjacent traffic signal controlled roundabout has reached a successful conclusion.
The works were to provide east bound and west bound access into the new St James Retail Park development and also to provide the extra vehicular capacity required for such a development. The retail park is being developed by St James Securities Limited, with GMI Construction as the Principal Contractor for the scheme.
The scheme was extremely challenging. All the works were carried out on the live carriageway on an extremely busy route into and out of Sheffield. The use of temporary traffic management was restricted to off peak times only, with some activities allowed only to take place at night. We worked to resequence our phasing to mitigate the effect of delayed service diversions to ensure that over Client’s handover date was met.
The presence of Meadowhead School adjacent to our works meant that over 1000 pupils crossed our works twice a day.
We rolled out a full community liaison scheme, a scheme successfully delivered on previous S278 Works likely to cause severe dsiruption to traffic and local residents. This included the delivery of an electronic newsletter every 2 weeks to local residents, businesses and service providers, providing up to date information about the road works and warnings of temporary traffic management likely to cause disruption and have a detrimental affect on travel times.
Editions of our newsletters can be found on our dedicated St James Retail Park/Bochum Parkway web page https://www.howardcivileng.co.uk/st-james-retail-park-bochum-parkway/
The fit out of the various stores which include M&S Food, TKMaxx, Greggs, Shoezone, will commence in April with the whole retail park up and running by this autumn.
The S278 Works have been very well recieved by our Client and by St James Securities. SCC praised us for the reduced number of complaints they received during the works.
