Howard Civil Engineering are passionate about nurturing the next generation of construction professionals, and our apprentices are at the very heart of this commitment.

That’s why we were especially proud to celebrate the achievements of one of our own, Daniel Heffernan, at this year’s Leeds College of Building (LCB) BIG (Building Industry Greats) Awards.

Virgin Radio and LUTV broadcaster Rich Williams hosted the awards dinner and ceremony held at the Centenary Pavilion at Elland Road.

For many, a career in construction is not just about excavating, laying bricks or pouring concrete. It’s about building stability, confidence, and a future. At Howard Civil Engineering, our Foundations for Life programme has been designed to give people from disadvantaged backgrounds just that: a genuine opportunity to start afresh, supported by tailored training, on-site mentorship, and pastoral care.
Two of its recent participants, Rick Heeley and Daryl Shaw, joined the company through very different life circumstances. Rick had been unemployed for a year after leaving London to work closer to home, while Daryl was navigating life after prison. Both, however, found the programme to be a turning point.

At Howard Civil Engineering, we believe that our role as a business goes far beyond delivering high-quality construction projects. As part of our social value programme, we actively look for opportunities to make a positive impact in the communities where we live and work. Recently, we were proud to complete a project at Melbourne Primary School in York, in partnership with Wates Group, that has improved safety and created a better environment for pupils.

Many people experiencing major challenges in their life– including addiction, homelessness and post-prison rehabilitation – find their problems compounded by significant barriers to entering the workforce. To support people facing these obstacles, Howard Civil Engineering launched Foundations for Life, our flagship social value recruitment programme designed to provide life-changing employment opportunities and a stepping-stone to stability.

A brand-new Urgent and Emergency Care Centre (UECC) at Scarborough Hospital has officially opened its doors, marking a significant milestone for healthcare provision across the region.

To start the New Year off right, we were thrilled to work with the Barrie Wells Trust and their Box4Kids initiative to provide three children with an incredible VIP experience.
