Background

Howard Civil Engineering was awarded an enabling works package on the highly anticipated York Railway Station gateway improvement scheme.

The City of York Council scheme aims to encourage more people to walk, cycle and use public transport to access the station, in addition to creating a more welcoming and inclusive environment around the front of the railway station for the public.

In conjunction with the city-centre Hudson Quarter redevelopment, for which Howard Civil Engineering also delivered three reinforced concrete frames, it is hoped the £25m scheme will attract investment and jobs to the city.

This project was delivered in partnership by City of York Council, Network Rail, LNER and the West Yorkshire Combined Authority.

Scope

  • Navigate existing services whilst installing ducting which will facilitate future service diversions
  • Disconnect and reconnect electrical supply to the left luggage cabin which is to be relocated
  • Extensive coordination with Network Rail, LNER and various other stakeholders
  • Maintain access and use of the car park throughout the duration of the works
  • Unexploded ordnance and numerous previously unexhumed skeletons, requiring an archaeological watching brief whilst excavating
