Background

In 2012, Interserve secured the £100m PFI agreement to build two police stations in Leeds and a state-of-the-art training facility at Carr Gate, Wakefield. Howard Civil Engineering was successful in tendering for the training operation facility at Carr Gate which represented the largest of the three projects.

Located adjacent to Wakefield Police Station, the £40m project included high specification classrooms, gyms, breakout areas, firearms training, driver training unit block, dog training and many other state-of-the-art training facilities. It was successfully handed over in February 2014.

Scope of works

  • Extension to a live secure facility
  • Installation of a 0.25mile long temporary access road full construction, including tarmac
  • New firearms training building - Reinforced concrete foundations and ground beams
  • Firearms training building - 7000m² of laser screeded reinforced concrete floors
  • Public order building - Mass-fill foundations, reinforced concrete ground floor suspended slab and Holorib upper floor construction
  • HUB Building - Reinforced concrete foundations, retaining walls, ground bearing reinforced concrete slab and reinforced concrete Holorib upper floors
  • Skills village - Individual units constructed to simulate a live village, all reinforced concrete foundations and slab works
  • Extensive drainage and service duct installation package.
  • 20,000m² of tarmac to access roads, car parks and internally to training facility
  • Large hardlandscaping package including block paving, York Stone paving and Grasscrete
  • External reinforced concrete slabs to fuelling area
