Location: Harrogate
Contract Period: 24 weeks

Background

Following the successful delivery of work to repair and reconstruct bridges along Cogden Beck for North Yorkshire County Council, Howard Civil Engineering has been awarded a £1m contract to demolish and reconstruct a bridge over Oak Beck which forms part of the A59 in Harrogate.

The bridge is heavily used by traffic, thanks in part to high volumes of traffic visiting the Oak Beck retail park, and is in a deteriorating condition.

Howard Civil Engineering will be undertaking works to demolish the existing bridge on Skipton Road and then design and build a replacement bridge.

Access over the bridge will be maintained throughout the project, with the exception of night works for surfacing.

Scope

  • Site clearance and removal of existing trees and vegetation
  • Removal and demolition of existing bridge structure ensuring it is temporarily supported when phasing the works
  • Installation of a piled foundation solution with heavily reinforced pile caps to transfer the loads
  • Construction of reinforced concrete wingwalls and training walls
  • Construction of reinforced concrete bridge deck including specialist waterproofing works
  • Masonry and stone works to clad the structure and form the parapets
  • Highway construction including kerbing, traffic signs and surfacing works
