Hudson Quarter

Client: Caddick Construction

Value: £5m
Location: York
Contract Period: Commences April 2019
Contract Type: JCT Sub-contract 2011

Background

Replacing a prominent 1960s office building in the centre of York overlooking the historic city walls, Hudson Quarter provides a combined residential, retail and office development.

Caddick Construction was awarded the design and build by Palace Capital Developments in February 2019; commencing with the demolition of the former building.

Three concrete frames and one steel frame make up four blocks in total around a landscaped central courtyard. Now complete, this site comprises three concrete residential blocks totalling 122,000² ft and one 34,500² ft steel-framed Grade A office block with an additional 5000² m of commercial space. External works include hard and soft landscaping and 100 surface parking spaces.

Howard Civil Engineering was awarded the groundworks package together with the reinforced concrete frames in March 2019. Having supported Caddick Construction on many previous projects, this was our first reinforced concrete frame for this client.

Scope of works

  • Early Contractor Involvement to rationalise phasing and crane requirements
  • Phased to address the constraints posed by a central location with restricted access and site footprint
  • Site-wide groundworks
  • Reinforced concrete cores for all four blocks
  • 3 reinforced concrete frames to up to 8 storeys
  • Upper floors to steel frame block
  • Provision of tower crane for 36 weeks
  • External works
  • Hard landscaping
