Having long been a member of The Howarth Foundation’s Business Building Futures initiative, we couldn’t be prouder to sponsor event manager Rachael Hepworth’s Street2Feet 75k run for Day 12 of #12DaysOfHCE!
Rachael ran 75k over two days to raise money for The Howarth Foundation, finishing her mammoth run at our head office yesterday.
The Howarth Foundation is a wonderful charity which actively partners businesses with homeless or recently re-housed jobless people in search of full or part-time employment.
Rachael’s gruelling 75k run saw her battle sub-zero temperatures, frosty ground conditions and excruciating sciatica to visit each of The Howarth Foundation’s 16 partnered businesses across Leeds, Huddersfield and Cleckheaton.

The Howard Civil Engineering team was there to congratulate Rachael at the finish line and present her with a cheque for £500, bringing Rachael’s total fundraising sum to a whopping £2,200!

Throughout December, Howard Civil Engineering is spreading festive cheer by donating £5,000 to a variety of charities and community groups across the north of England! While many of us will be celebrating Christmas in the comfort of our own homes, hundreds of patients at Scarborough Hospital will be spending the day in hospital – with many patients not receiving a single gift or seeing a visitor at all.
That’s why Howard Civil Engineering has donated £250 to York & Scarborough Hospitals Charity to help them purchase a warm, cosy blanket for each patient and brighten their Christmas this year!
Maya Liversidge, Community Fundraiser at York & Scarborough Hospitals Charity, said: “Blankets can be used by all our patients and that’s really important. Not everyone can eat a box of chocolates or use body lotions, so blankets are a lovely gift for all. We have 320 beds at Scarborough Hospital and we anticipate them all to be in use on Christmas day, so we prepare a gift for each person.
“Christmas can be lonely for some, and receiving a gift from the ward staff is a lovely moment – one that we want to be a part of,” she continued. “Support from companies like yourselves makes this small act with a massive impact possible, and we are truly grateful for your support this Christmas.”
Howard Civil Engineering is currently working to construct a new A&E department at Scarborough Hospital alongside our client, Integrated Health Projects (IHP).
Daron Walker, Senior Construction Manager at IHP, said: “This kind donation is an illustration of IHP’s caring values, family culture and collaborative approach we adopt with our client York & Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which was echoed in the recent Considerate Constructors Score of 45/45.
“Not only are we able to make a positive impact on the local community by delivering a quality state of the art facility but, as a team, we are striving to make the patient and staff environment as comfortable and homely as possible. It is gestures like this one that make this time of the year even more special for everyone.”

For day 10 of #12DaysOfHCE, we’ve decided to mix it up a little!
Inspire South Tyneside is the umbrella body for the voluntary and community sectors across South Tyneside, working alongside communities, the local authority, and statutory partners such as health services to facilitate the development of a vibrant, strong, and sustainable local third sector.
Our donation of £500 will help support their three areas of specialty: Volunteering and Communities, Health, and Funding.
In addition to representing the views of the sector at strategic bodies and groups, Inspire also provides support and development opportunities for voluntary, community and social enterprise groups in the local area, and offers a range of support and advice for charities hoping to receive more funding.
In the run up to Christmas, Inspire has been working in partnership with the Local Authority and the VCSE sector in South Tyneside to identify and put into place Warm Spaces as a response to the cost of living crisis.
Warm spaces are free public places where residents can go to get warm, save money on their heating costs, avoid social isolation, and receive support and advice. There has been a fantastic response, with a number of organisations and venues pledging their support to residents this winter. Inspire has also worked to establish a bursary scheme to ensure that local community organisations providing warm spaces can have a contribution toward their costs.
Sustainability manager Sophie Henderson said: “While the work that individual charities do on the ground is spectacular, a lot of it simply would not be possible without organisations such as Inspire South Tyneside. Howard Civil Engineering is pleased to present £500 to Inspire South Tyneside to help them support the selfless efforts of charities, volunteers, and community groups across the borough this Christmas.”
Charlotte Harrison, CEO at Inspire, expressed the charity’s thanks, saying the donation is “very kind” and is a “much needed contribution toward our work on supporting volunteering and the capacity of VCSE organisations in South Tyneside as they help to support residents over the Christmas and New Year period .”

Although Christmas is a time of joy for many, statistics show that police callouts for incidents of domestic abuse and calls to domestic abuse hotlines increase throughout the festive period.
That’s why Howard Civil Engineering has donated a total of £400 in cash and warm pyjamas to Wearside Women in Need, a wonderful charity based in Sunderland that operates refuge and outreach services, supporting women and children fleeing domestic abuse.
In addition to a £250 cheque, Howard Civil Engineering also donated several sets of women’s and children’s pyjamas for the charity to provide to its service users throughout the year!
We hope this donation helps to brighten the Christmases of the women and children in refuges this winter.

Based in Sunderland, Headlight is a fantastic mental health resource centre which offers volunteer opportunities, signposts members in the right direction, and runs various courses and recreational activities to give those struggling with poor mental health the tools to better manage their wellbeing.
As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Headlight says they are helping more people than ever – and they expect a high demand on their services over the Christmas period.
“We currently support around 70 to 80 people per week, but at Christmastime what tends to happen is people have this chocolate-box image of what Christmas should be like and when it doesn’t live up to that standard is when people start having trouble,” said Headlight manager Alison Bailey.
“A lot of places close down over Christmas and that means they haven’t got access to their usual spaces, their usual routine, so we try and keep things in place, give them strategies so they can get through the festive period.”
Howard Civil Engineering has donated £400 to the charity to help them support their service users this Christmas, and Alison and the team are overjoyed!
“Once again, thank you so much for your donation. To give you an idea of the difference we can make with £400, it covers the cost of providing 60 Listening sessions for people, or a Support Worker for the project for a week, or 30 hours of Generalist Advice Work tailored for people with mental health issues. Donations like yours mean a great deal to charities like ours and enable us to continue to provide these services and make a big difference for our service users and their families. Thank you so much for thinking of us – you have made our day. Thank you from us all.”

Based in South Tyneside, Key is a wonderful charity offering a range of housing advice, support, and accommodation services to young people at risk of homelessness in the local area.
In addition to this, Key also operates a food bank which has seen a staggering 310% increase in referrals since the start of the pandemic and now supports over 16,000 people annually.
Howard Civil Engineering is honoured to contribute £500 towards Key to Life Foodbank’s Christmas appeal which will help them deliver food parcels and gifts, host free activities, and provide delicious meals for children and young people who are eligible for free school meals or whose family is experiencing hardship!
