It’s a great start. January 2016 has seen us mobilising to 3 new contracts across the Yorkshire region. The contracts are all for repeat Clients keen to work with Howard Civil Engineering again based on the previous performance delivered by our site teams.

UTC2, Sheffield

Back in July 2015 BAM Construction were awarded a £9.3 million project to create the second University Technical College in Sheffield (UTC2).

Sited adjacent to their recently completed, Oasis Academy Don Valley, a primary school and secondary school, also supported by Howard Civil Engineering, this second educational facility will specialise in academic qualifications in human sciences and computing, preparing students for employment in two of the key growth sectors in the Sheffield City Region. It will open in September 2016, and hold 600 pupils aged 14 to 19.

Howard Civil Engineering have commenced on site, carrying out the substructure, drainage and external works packages.

Rudding Park Hotel Extension, Harrogate

Howard Civil Engineering are pleased to be supporting Henry Boot in the delivery of this unique highly specified project; an extension to one of the North’s leading hotels.

The works consist of the construction of a new spa and hotel extension to the Grade 1 listed historic Rudding Park Hotel and our package includes bulk excavation, basement and reinforced concrete frame totalling approximately 2,000m3 of concrete.

It’s a surprisingly complex build on 3 levels with multiple split levels to incorporate 2 pools and associated plant and equipment.

The new spa, featuring a 17m swimming pool, hydrotherapy pool, thermal rooms, treatment rooms, an additional restaurant and shops, will take 14 months to build.

Prior to award the Client paid several visits to our Yeadon site, another RC frame for Henry Boot, assuring himself that he had choosen the right partners for this prestigious project.

TK MAXX distribution centre, Knottingley

January has also seen us commencing on phase one of this £100m development that will be home to the new TK Maxx distribution facility, providing more than 1.2 million sq ft of accommodation. The building is scheduled to complete in January 2017 and once operational will support up to 1,800 jobs.

It’s been a challenging start with the site submerged under the Christmas storms, but we are looking forward to supporting Caddick Construction, delivering the groundworks package on a huge scale befitting such a project.

Operations Director, Brian Sharkey, and Pre Contracts Manager, Lucie Jones, today visited the Volvo Construction Equipment Support Centre in Immingham to view the company’s new plant fleet acquistion.

This investment in proven advanced technology, built on decades of Volvo’s experience, will result in the best in class fuel efficiency while not compromising on power – reducing emissions and consumption, while increasing productivity.

In all 20 excavators, a mix of general and compact machines up to 28T in operating weight, will be transferred to our sites across Yorkshire across the coming months.

While our waterlogged sites dry out after the 2015 Christmas downpours, we at Howard Civil Engineering look forward into the New Year and the positive signs of growth in the construction sector.

Last week, following the Chancellor’s launch of the National Infrastructure Commission in York, a body that will ensure that the billions of pounds the Government is to spend on transport links in the North will deliver real benefits for people and businesses, George Osborne made a visit to the A1L2B site.

He was also joined by former Transport Secretary Lord Adonis, Highways England chairman Colin Mathews, and Richmond MP Rishi Sunak. Together, they showed their commitment and appreciation to the workforce for their efforts on creating better links throughout the country.

Howard Civil Engineering is currently undertaking a £1.5million drainage package for Carillion Morgan Sindall JV at the site.

The National Infrastructure Commission’s initial focus will include work on improving connectivity in northern England – a key part of the Chancellor’s Northern Powerhouse agenda.

We are very pleaseed to announce that one of our apprentices, Ben Mills, has been nominated for ‘Young Trainee of the Year’ at the Celebrating Construction in South Yorkshire Awards 2015 to be held on Friday 9th October at the Cutlers’ Hall Sheffield.

Ben, 19, has recently completed his Level 2 NVQ in General Construction Operative apprenticeship, 6 months before he was due to complete. Whilst undertaking his apprenticeship he underwent and passed further training for his CPCS card in ride on roller and forward tipping dumper in which Howard Civil Engineering invested due to his fantastic attitude . Following the sucessful completion of his apprenticeship he was offered employment by Howard Civil Engineering and now undertakes ground working duties as part of a 3 man gang working alongside HCE more experienced operatives.

Ben originally came to us for his final apprenticeship year in September 2014 through our successful link with Futureworks (Yorkshire) which is a scheme that enables apprenticeships to be completed through more than one company. Futureworks provide us with a flexible and high quality service in the provision of apprenticeships managing the process from feasibility, recruitment, learning provider liaison, pastoral care and on-going mentoring.

Futureworks (Yorkshire) have also been shortlisted for ‘ Team of the Year’ at the CCISY awards.

Ben is just one of a number of apprentices at Howard Civil Engineering and Howard Plant. In these days of skills shortages, we are keen to support the upskilling of young people, investing in the future of the construction industry.

We wish Futureworks and Ben every success on the night.

Howard Civil Engineering have secured the civils work package for the biggest free school in the country, the Ruth Gorse Academy

This new Government-funded free school is located on derelict land between Black Bull Street and the New Dock development close to the Royal Armouries.

Once complete it will provide a facility for 1,580 pupils and 150 staff and is tipped to drive the regeneration of the south of the city centre. The Ruth Gorse Academy is actually already up and running, sharing the site of the Morley Academy, so a ready made student population are looking forward to entering through the school gates in September 2016.

Howard Civil Engineering, working for BAM Construction started on site this month carrying out the substructure and superstructure RC works togther with the foul and surface water drainage and external works package.

‘We are proud to be part of a project ultimately providing education for the children of Leeds.’

Michael Howard, MD Howard Civil Engineering

The Carr Lodge Academy has been constructed from scratch in less than a year and is due to open it’s doors to pupils this coming month. It represents the first new primary school to be built in Doncaster in over 30 years.

The use of a ‘Sunesis model’ (pre designed building) meant that the school building was ready in just nine months after work started, giving staff and pupils a bright and spacious building, thoughtfully planned with excellent facilities that have used the best design ideas from other schools.

Howard Civil engineering commenced the ground works package on site in November 2014. We wish the school every success for the new term ahead.
