2 years on and these flood alleviation works are almost unrecognisable. 25,000m3 of earth was shifted by Howard Civil Engineering with GPS guided dozers to form these 3 interlinking ponds in a field just south of the new Persimmon Homes residential site in York.

The flood volume replaces the volume that has been taken up from the formation of the new S278 junction located within an area that used to flood with water backed up along Germany Beck from the River Ouse.

The ponds take in water from the rising Germany Beck and stores it until water levels reside.

The area has been heavily planted so the area will continue to change over the next decade. Paths have been built to provide local residents, new and old, a beautiful place to walk or watch the birds that have already taken up their new homes amongst the reeds.

Beautiful put practical.

Congratulations to Ben Williams having been recently promoted to Contracts Manager. Ben is the result of the successful apprenticeship programme run at Howard Civil Engineering.

Ben joined Howard Civil Engineering at sixteen in 2007 straight from school, and  progressed from site labourer to senior site engineer within seven years. Now in 2018 he is one of two Contracts Managers responsible for the overall management of several contracts.

HCE’s encouragement, support and investment in Ben’s vocational education, onsite experience and CPD has seen Ben propelled into the popular manager he is today.

HCE MD Michael Howard commented, “Our apprentices are key to our sustained growth and profitability. The Apprenticeship programme underpins our vision and ethos of being the best and investing in lifelong learning.”

HCE measures the success of its Apprenticeship programme via a series of Key Performance Indicators which include feedback from clients and partners, managers and mentors and from Leeds City College – the learning provider.

The programme’s success is also evaluated by the number of apprentices who stay on after completing their training. Most attend Leeds College of Building one day a week.

Only 6 weeks in and we are pouring the first floor slabs to this RC Frame for Hollycroft Construction in Leeds. The 2 slipform cores flew up to this 10 storey PRS accomodation block in this rapidly changing area of the city.

As with many city centre sites, space is tight but with our head office and plant yard just over 3 miles away we are able to use off site space for prefabricating steel and constructing formwork/falsework.

Over 4,000m3 of concrete will be poured before we are finished.

The view from up here belies the challenges of these S278 Works on the A19, Fulford, York for Persimmon Homes. The A19 is closed for wearing course and road markings next week and as we race towards the finish line we should not forget the ground conditions, ecology constraints, public liaison, archaeology, tangle of historical services, local sensitivity, and York bound traffic that the team has overcome along the way. Keep going! We’re nearly there!  https://www.howardcivileng.co.uk/case-studies/germany-beck-s278-works/

A fifth scheme for Persimmon Homes has commenced in Harrogate. These works for the provision of adoptable infrastructure for 233 units alongside a S278 Work package to provide a new filter lane into site marks our fifth scheme for Persimmon Homes.

The Penny Pot Lane site is just a couple of miles away from our 144 unit Otley Road, Harrogate site, also for Persimmon Homes, which commenced in March. The Otley Road scheme also includes a filter lane and 230m cycleway S278 works package.

To the relief of local traffic the Germany Beck A19 junction in York is nearing completion with wearing course programmed for the end of this month. However, we will not be leaving this site yet as the first phase of roads and sewers for this 650 unit site is well underway. A 5m deep sewer diversion requiring a full well point dewatering system is keeping our gangs challenged.

We’ve nearly completed our RC Frame for Wates for Leeds City College. These drone shots provide us with a unique prospective of the quality product we have delivered.

The footprint, existing topography and city centre location made this a challenging build which was off set by the advance logistical planning undertaken by Howard Civil Engineering prior to being awarded the scheme.

The works commenced in July 2017 with the groundworks package.

In brief the substructure consists of a 3500m2 basement with foundations, drainage, retaining walls, earthworks and vertical columns and cores.

The superstructure involved the construction of 6no blocks up to 8 stories high.
