Howard Civil Engineering are pleased to announce we have pledged our support to The Howarth Foundation’s Business Building Futures initiative.

The Howarth Foundation is an esteemed local charity actively partnering businesses with the homeless or recently re-housed jobless in search of full or part-time employment.

Emphasising our commitment to the Business Building Futures initiative, Managing Director Michael Howard commented, ‘We are thrilled to offer our support to the Howarth Foundation and the amazing work they are accomplishing in the West Yorkshire region. We are extremely hopeful that in due course, Howard Civil Engineering can help at least one participant of the scheme take ‘the next step’ towards achieving full-time employment in the construction industry, either on-site or in our Leeds-based offices.’

In addition to joining the likes of the Leeds United Foundation and Toyota Huddersfield in supporting this inspiring initiative, Howard Civil Engineering are also the main sponsor of The Howarth Foundation’s Sporting Dinner fundraiser on Saturday 20th July, in which we will be joined by Leeds sporting legends Jamie Peacock MBE and Noel Whelan.

Lots of splashing, an electric atmosphere, and an incredible amount of money raised for charity – it can only be Bradford Dragon Boat Festival!

This year, Howard Civil Engineering competed for the first time ever with the hope of raising money and awareness for Bradford Hospitals’ Charity’s Rays a Smile campaign.

Along with 38 other teams, we took to the waters of Roberts Park, Saltaire, on Sunday 23rd June, and didn’t do too shabbily if we do say so ourselves! We massively improved our row time throughout the day from 1:19:94 to a respectable 1:14:03, leaving us in 13th place overall.

Most importantly, we managed to raise a whopping £2,770 for Rays a Smile – that’s more than any other team racing for Bradford Hospitals Charity on Sunday! We couldn’t have done it without the support of our fantastic sponsors (below), and we’d like to thank everyone very much for their generous donations.

The Rays a Smile campaign aims to raise £250,000 to transform the radiology departments at Bradford Teaching Hospitals into warm and welcoming spaces for children.

We hope to continue engaging with communities in Bradford as we progress with our roadworks on Hard Ings Road and Beechcliffe Roundabout for Bradford Council.

The scheme for the Hard Ings Road is being developed by the City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council (CBMDC). The scheme has received investment through the West Yorkshire Plus Transport Fund as part of the Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership (LEP) Growth Deal – a £1 billion package of government investment to accelerate growth and create jobs across Leeds City Region.

Did you miss the boat? Don’t worry, there’s still time to donate here!

We’ve always been committed to improving the health & wellbeing of our operatives here at Howard Civil Engineering. Recently, we’ve taken this one step further by introducing improved suitable and adequate Respiratory Protection Equipment (RPE) to our workforce on-site.

All applicable operatives are now subject to face-fit testing for the negative pressure ‘JSP Force 8 push to check’ reusable half-face mask, which offers the required P3 level of protection and improved comfort fit to our operatives. For operatives who require RPE which considers their religious/cultural beliefs and the associated impact this has on PPE/RPE provisions (such as those who wear turbans or have substantial facial hair growth), we have also provided positive pressure hoods. This ensures all our operatives remain as safe and healthy as possible while carrying out their work duties.

Commenting on the benefits of this new equipment, Health and Safety Advisor Wanda Curtis commented, ‘We continue to work towards eliminating, so far is reasonably practicable, exposure to dust in the workplace for the benefit of both our operatives and those around us. Our efforts include the use of various collective elimination methods such as dust extraction and suppression at the source and the provision of suitable and adequate RPE.’

The Futurist Theatre in Scarborough was built in 1921 and played host to many world-famous artists – namely, The Beatles – but finally closed in 2014. In 2017 it was deemed unsustainable as a theatre venue by Scarborough Borough Council and it was agreed amid high contention the Futurist would be demolished to make way for new business.

Howard Civil Engineering were selected by main contractor Willmott Dixon to deliver a complex enabling and cliff stabilisation package.

The enabling works to the seafront road were necessary to provide safe access to the Futurist theatre ahead of the main demolition works and slope stabilisation was imperative to ensure the safety of the cliff.

During an initial pre-demolition phase, enabling works to the seafront carriageway and the first stage of the slope stabilisation; installing concrete ballast against the rear internal walls whilst the theatre remained intact, was undertaken.

Commencing works on the second phase, the cliff stabilisation, March 2019.

Vacuum excavation working around live services in preparation to install a new draining scheme and retaining wall, March 2019.

Our on-site team were treated to a hearty breakfast by our client, Willmott Dixon, to say thank you for their hard work and outstanding health and safety standards – well done, team! April 2019

Works advancing on the North retaining wall, April 2019.

Done and dusted! Completed works to the Blands Cliff stabilisation, May 2019.

The Futurist site is earmarked to be bought by popular theme park company Flamingo Land.

As we undertake roadworks on Hard Ings Road on behalf of Bradford Council, we’re also tackling the row-works at Bradford Dragon Boat Festival to raise money for Bradford Hospitals’ Charity’s Rays a Smile appeal!

We’re hoping to raise £500 for this spectacular cause, helping Bradford Hospitals’ Charity to transform the radiology departments at Bradford Teaching Hospitals into warm and welcoming spaces for children. Bradford Dragon Boat Race Festival will take place Sunday 23rd June 2019 at Roberts Park, Saltaire.

Money raised will go directly to Bradford Hospitals’ Charity, and we’ll be sure to thank every one of our corporate sponsors on our website. Take a look at how your donation could help the children of Bradford:

Howard Civil Engineering is pleased to announce we have achieved UKAS accredited ISO 45001 certification!

Our existing OHSAS 18001 certification gave us a good head start on the upgrade, but in conjunction with migrating our management systems into a cloud-based system a commitment was made by our directors to ensure we keep ahead of compliance and continually look to develop and improve our existing management systems by dedicating senior management time to this end goal.

Special recognition must go to our Health and Safety, Quality and Environmental Manager, Andy Rafton, for all the work that has gone into this achievement.

Health and Safety is the responsibility of senior management personnel, but every member of our team has a valued part to play. Howard Civil Engineering has made a commitment to provide education to all employees, from head office staff to site operatives, to help identify risks and encourage our team members to confidently voice their needs and concerns and participate in regular forums.

We believe we are ahead of our competitors in this transition from OHSAS 18001 to ISO 45001, with the transition deadline set for March 2021.

ISO 45001 brings the responsibility of safety to company leadership and establishes how safety incorporates into the entire organization, rather than making it a responsibility of safety management. The standard has more detailed clauses lining out its expectations of employee involvement, requiring the documentation of results and program effectiveness, risk evaluation and considering how safety affects all affected parties, not only employees but contractors and other suppliers.
