Last week, Howard Civil Engineering paid a visit to Barnsley foodbank to donate almost 400 items of much-needed food and toiletries!

In addition to the food and toiletries, we have also presented the food bank with a cheque for £250 which will help cover transport and delivery costs as they gear up for a busy Christmas period.

The food bank, which is part of the nationwide Trussell Trust network, has helped to feed 4,789 people in 2020 alone – 1,843 of which were children.

Community liaison officer Sophie Henderson commented: “Howard Civil Engineering believe the community local to our projects to be of paramount importance and are always happy to help where possible.

“The team at Howard Civil Engineering were very touched when we saw local businesses and community groups banding together to feed families over the October school holidays and it gives us all great pleasure to be able to support those most vulnerable in our society over the festive period.”

She also urged members of the local community to follow suit and extend a helping hand to those in need if they are able to: “After what has been a difficult year for everyone, food banks such as the one in Barnsley have noted that more people are reliant on food parcels than ever. Donating even the smallest amount of food or money if you are able to really can go a long way.”

Barnsley Food Bank have recently updated their Amazon wish list of supplies they need to feed those dependent on food parcels this Christmas. You can find out more and donate on their website

Pupils at Calverley CE Primary School received a fantastic Christmas surprise last week courtesy of Howard Civil Engineering!

Our Greengates junction site team kindly presented over 400 books to the school so that each child would have a gift to open this Christmas.

Headteacher Mr Curran commented: “We are absolutely delighted for the very generous support of Howard Civil Engineering in helping us to ensure Santa can give a Christmas gift to every child in school this year. Their commitment to supporting the community in which they are working is very much appreciated by everyone at school and will help to put smiles on lots of faces at Calverley CE Primary this Christmas!”

The children excitedly unwrapped their books last Friday during a festive-filled day organised by staff and parents at the school.

Simon Doling, site agent on the Greengates junction scheme for Howard Civil Engineering, presented members of the PTA with the donation earlier this month.

“It is wonderful to be able to spread some festive cheer in what has undoubtedly been a difficult year for everyone and we are very happy that the children loved the books,” he said. “We have nurtured a very positive relationship with members of the Greengates community over the past six months and it is very rewarding to be able to give something back to a community that has been so welcoming.”Simon Doling, site agent on the Greengates junction scheme for Howard Civil Engineering, presented members of the PTA with the donation earlier this month.

Although work will continue on the junction over the Christmas period, Howard Civil Engineering will be pausing works from Thursday 24th December to Sunday 3rd January.  During this time, we will be increasing maintenance of the existing traffic management measures in place and urge anyone who should notice an emergency during this period to call the RTS 24/7 call-out number on 01724 848 246.

You can receive updates on progress to the junction and warnings of potential traffic disruption by subscribing to Howard Civil Engineering’s fortnightly newsletter here: www.howardcivileng.co.uk/greengates-junction

Earlier this year Howard Civil Engineering commenced improvement works on Greengates Junction, a notoriously congested major junction in Bradford, on behalf of Bradford Council.

Since mid-2020 our team has been hard at work transforming the junction, and an outline of how the junction will look upon completion is becoming clearer every day.

The project will see Howard Civil Engineering undertake major improvements to the existing junction including widening the existing highway on all four arms of the junction, signal upgrades and a P-loop. Cyclists and pedestrians will also benefit from the scheme with the addition of new cycle lanes, pedestrian islands, and more controlled crossings.

Recent drone imagery taken by local resident Paul Dranks shows the significant amount of progress made to the junction in fewer than six months.

Members of the Howard Civil Engineering team took on the hairy Movember challenge last month to help shave away the stigma of mental health and raise money for the Lighthouse Club.

The Lighthouse Club is the only charity that provides financial and emotional support to the construction community and our loved ones.

Together, the Howard Civil Engineering team raised a fantastic £571.77 for the charity, smashing our target of £500!

Team players:

Well done everyone for your efforts and thank you very much to everyone who donated!

Merely two weeks after starting his month-long work experience with Howard Civil Engineering, nineteen-year-old Alex Atter already knows that pursuing a career in construction was the right choice for him.

Bradford local Alex is currently working at our high-profile Greengates Junction Improvement Scheme as a labourer.

‘I approached Howard Civil Engineering as I know they are a great company to work for and like to give young people the opportunity to work,’ he said. ‘I have always wanted to work in construction and I hope that the skills I learn and the experience I gain throughout my time with Howard Civil Engineering will put me in good stead for a career in construction.’

While on site, Alex will be taught safety skills such as the most appropriate way to work around plant, machinery, and excavations, and best practices which will help to protect both himself, his team, and machinery from potential injury and damage.

Over the past week, Alex has also been paired with gangs who are teaching him basic construction skills and how to identify the various materials used for road construction. Commenting on his experience so far, Alex noted that ‘the team has been great to work with and learn from.’

Greengates site supervisor Mick Bottomley is thrilled that Alex has taken this learning opportunity in his stride.

‘Alex has only been with us a short while, but he has a good attitude and completes the tasks set to a good standard,’ he said. ‘He’s reliable and a very good timekeeper!’

Following the donation of pitch covers earlier this year, Howard Civil Engineering are proud to continue our support of Keighley Cricket Club with a sponsorship donation of £1,900!

Keighley Cricket Club kindly offered their facilities to Howard Civil Engineering throughout the duration of improvement works along Hard Ings Road, Bradford, and we are thrilled to offer them this sponsorship as a gesture of thanks.

‘Throughout the duration of the Hard Ings Road scheme, we developed a good working relationship with Howard Civil Engineering,’ commented Keighley Cricket Club director Nigel Allsopp (left). ‘We got on well with the team, particularly the site manager Simon [Doling], and the finished product is good.’

‘It’s been a difficult year for the club so this sponsorship will help us keep the club running,’ said chairman Paul Barker (right).

Earlier this year, Howard Civil Engineering donated pitch covers to the club.

Keighley Cricket Club currently run three senior sides, U19s, T20, U17s, U15s, U13s, U11s and U9s cricket. Like many other sporting facilities and clubs, Keighley Cricket Club have been hit hard by the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic. Howard Civil Engineering, alongside other businesses local to Hard Ings Road, are hoping to take part in a fundraising cricket match next year to raise money for the club.

Throughout the duration of the scheme on Hard Ings Road we worked hard to establish positive relationships with members of the community, donating over £7,900 to local clubs and charities and contributing over 160 volunteer hours! As part of our £7,900 community engagement initiative, we also sponsored a match for Keighley Cougars Rugby Club and built new playground equipment for nursery pupils at Crossflatts Primary School.

The scheme for Hard Ings Road was developed by the City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council (CBMDC). The scheme received investment through the West Yorkshire Plus Transport Fund as part of the Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership (LEP) Growth Deal – a £1 billion package of government investment to accelerate growth and create jobs across Leeds City Region.
