Food banks such as this one in Bradford have unfortunately become a lifeline for many of our local communities, so we thought it only fitting to ensure we endeavour to support those most vulnerable in Bradford this Christmastime.
In addition to a monetary donation to help fund Christmas hampers, Howard Civil Engineering has also donated toys and toiletry sets to the food bank’s grotto! Food bank users can visit the food bank, select toys or toiletry sets for their children, and then wrap them before taking them home to give to their loved ones.
Josie Barlow, manager at Bradford Food Bank, informed us that 400 people in the Bradford community would be receiving a Christmas hamper and over 600 others would be depending on the food bank over the Christmas period.

Throughout December, Howard Civil Engineering is spreading festive cheer by donating £5,000 to a variety of charities and community groups across Yorkshire! We have chosen 12 different causes to help this festive period and we will be documenting these throughout the month using the hashtag #12DaysOfHCE.
Earlier this year, Howard Civil Engineering raised over £2,100 for Mind in Bradford by taking part in the Tough Mudder 5K.
We made the decision to continue our support of Mind in Bradford this Christmas by sponsoring a bauble on their Christmas tree! This sponsorship could fund 12 early intervention therapeutic sessions for people struggling with poor mental health in Bradford.
According to recent statistics, one in four construction workers have considered taking their own life and the suicide rate for construction industry workers is over three times the national average. This is a cause that is very prevalent to our industry, and we are supporting Mind in Bradford and help ensure that no one in Bradford is left alone while struggling with poor mental health.
Lydia Gray, Fundraising and Development Officer at Mind in Bradford, said: “We are so pleased to have the support of Howard Civil Engineering. Winter can be a difficult time for many of us – feelings of loneliness and social isolation are amplified, and finances are often stretched around the Christmas period.
“But thanks to the support of local businesses, we can support more people through these winter pressures – and make a positive difference together.”

Throughout the duration of our improvement works at Greengates junction we have fostered a great working relationship with the Friends of Greengates community group, even assisting with their weekly litter picks and assisting with the installation of the community Christmas tree over the past two years!
We recognise the vital work that Friends of Greengates do in the local Bradford community, and what better way to repay them than to support them over the Christmas period?
For the second day of #12DaysOfHCE, we presented Friends of Greengates with a £300 cheque to help them fund community activities and events for Greengates locals.
We are very proud to have such a positive relationship with Friends of Greengates, and we would like to wish every volunteer a very Merry Christmas!

For the first day of #12DaysOfHCE, we are supporting St John’s Community Church in Greengates, Bradford.
The church plays an integral role in the local Greengates community, providing support and guidance for many locals including the vulnerable and the elderly.
This £250 donation will help the church to renovate their hall and transform it into a thriving community hub for local residents to hire for events, parties, and community group get-togethers.
Churchwarden Susan Edmondson (pictured, left, alongside Rev Chris Baxfield) expressed her thanks on behalf of the church: “Many thanks to Howard Civil Engineering for their donation. We will be pleased to use it to support our plans as a community church to develop our hub here in Greengates.”
When accounts assistant Geraldine Thomas announced she was intending to donate over £370 of stationery to Montserrat’s only secondary school, directors at Howard Civil Engineering were only too happy to help!
Montserrat Secondary School presently offers inclusive education, meaning all students of secondary-school-age attend. As a result, there is a great demand for stationery, electronics, software, computers, calculators, tablets, coloured pencils, whiteboard markers and “anything that would make teaching and learning fun and effective.”
Geraldine’s sister is Montserrat Secondary School alumni and recently approached Geraldine for support. With Geraldine’s help, Howard Civil Engineering has donated an array of calculators, pens, paper, rulers, and sticky notes to Montserrat Secondary School in order to support students and encourage learning!
“These donations will go a long way to assist our teachers, students, parents and staff to support our drive to embrace and provide quality education for all students,” said vice principle Hyacinth C. Bramble-Browne.
The Caribbean island of Montserrat has faced several years of volcanic activity in addition to recovering from the long-term impacts of Hurricane Hugo, a Category 4 hurricane. These natural disasters have resulted in 70 percent of the population emigrating from the island, meaning only around 4,500 currently reside in Montserrat.
“With a small population, the local business community is stressed,” explains Hyacinth. “Although they make a mammoth effort, they cannot provide extra support in addition to the support from the Government to all of our schools as well as to other local activities with the level of support they could have provided in former years.”
Howard Civil Engineering is honoured to be making a positive impact not only in our local communities, but those overseas too.
Should you wish to help the school in any way, you can contact the school to arrange a donation by emailing: mss@gov.ms.
Over the past five months, Howard Civil Engineering has been offsetting and reducing the carbon emissions produced from Gateway 36, our 127-acre earthworks and S278 works project in Barnsley for our client, Harworth Group – and the results speak for themselves!
Machines on this site are the among first in our fleet to operate using hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) fuel. This fuel is a drop-in replacement for standard diesel and is made from 100 percent renewable and sustainable raw materials. Compared with normal diesel, HVO fuel reduces emissions by up to a whopping 90 percent.
We also began offsetting our emissions from this site early in 2021. As of September 2021, we have offset a whopping 227,294 litres of gasoil and 578.68 tonnes of CO2e!
To offset these emissions, Howard Civil Engineering is investing in both the Katingan Peatland Reforestation and Conservation Project and the 86 MW Hydro Project in Himachal Pradesh, India.
The Katingan Project seeks to protect and restore 149,800 hectares of peatland ecosystems in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia, in addition to offering sustainable sources of income to local people and tackling global climate change.
Elsewhere, in India, the 86 MW Hydro Project uses water as a renewable energy source to generate electricity, which is transmitted to Bajaura substation before being exported to the Northern, Easter, Western and North-Eastern grid.
These measures are just the start of Howard Civil Engineering’s plans to help us build more sustainable future.
We are looking forward to welcoming 19 new NRMM Stage 5 engine excavators to our fleet in 2022. These excavators will reduce our emission of Oxides of Nitrogen by 90 percent and particulate matter by 68 percent in comparison to the plant we are currently using.
Howard Civil Engineering has also recently purchased a brand-new eco-friendly welfare unit which is situated at our Entice site for Strata in Leeds. With a hybrid power plant and an automatic generator, this fully insulated unit boasts an estimated saving of approximately 2,580 litres of fuel per year. We are looking to roll out more of these units across several other sites in future.
