Supporting the WISE campaign for gender balance in science, technology and engineering

02 August 2017

Howard Civil Engineering is pleased to support Estimating Assisstant Sophie Henderson in her role as a STEM Ambassador in association with the WISE campaign.

WISE promotes the growth in numbers in women in science, technology and engineering as well as helping organisations to attract, retain, develop and progress female talent.

WISE offers training in the delivery of the revolutionary 'People Like Me' resources. 'People Like Me' is a revolutionary resource for teachers, STEM ambassadors, careers advisers and others working with young people to show girls that people just like them are happy and successful working in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM). The training and resources provided are specifically designed to reach out to girls through the language and approach that is used.

Sophie about to commence her 2nd of 3 years at Leeds College of Building  working towards an HND in Construction in the Built Environment.

After being approached by one of her tutors from Leeds College of Building Sophie attended training to equip her to visit secondary schools and talk to groups of female pupils about the importance of including a STEM subject within their education to maintain a board field of opportunity for many different careers and also talk about her experience in the Construction Industry.

She is looking forward to delivering her first workshop. We hope to reach out to many schools local to our sites.

Of course, we are biased towards the Construction Industry but if Sophie is able to inspire girls to choose to include maths, physics or computing within their GCSE options our daughters and our industry can not fail to benefit.

Trust us to deliver your project on time and on budget
