Newsletter No 21. Week Commencing Monday 17th May. First published Friday 14th May 2021.
This newsletter is to provide you with an update on the Greengates Junction Improvement works.
Please note traffic management measures remain in place at Greengates junction to enable us to work on all four arms of the junction. Please plan your journey accordingly if you are passing through the junction.
Additionally, we are aware that a small number of road users are making dangerous manoeuvres around the traffic management measures which jeopardise the safety of others. Should you witness any dangerous or illegal manoeuvres, please report these directly to West Yorkshire Police.
**As the COVID-19 restrictions in place across the country gradually ease, we are expecting to see an increase in the number of vehicles passing through the junction. We kindly ask road users and pedestrians to continue practicing social distancing around the site and being considerate of other drivers when passing the temporary traffic management measures.**
Howard Civil Engineering and Bradford Council would like to thank those who are driving safely through the junction. Your continued patience and understanding as we undertake improvement works are greatly appreciated.
Progress, the past two weeks
We are pleased to say we have completed both the first phase of high and low voltage cable diversions around Greengates junction, and the gas diversion works outside New Line Retail Park.
The completion of these gas diversion works has enabled us to commence drainage installation and further advance road widening works in this area. On New Line Retail Park, we have also laid the final surface layer and necessary markings to form the additional parking area in the former end retail unit.
We have also been busy removing existing lighting columns and replacing them with new ones around the junction.
Ducting installation in the road crossings has continued, which will facilitate the ongoing service diversions, and we have also investigated and identified unknown utility apparatus.
The next two weeks
Over the next two weeks, we will commence the installation of a new rainwater attenuation system on New Line.
We will also continue the installation of ducting in the road crossings which will enable us to progress with service diversions in these areas. Please note some of these diversions will be undertaken over the weekends of 15th - 16th May and 22nd - 23rd May to minimise disruption during the working week.
Road widening operations will continue along New Line, leading from Farmfoods to Sunnyside Day Nursery.
Discovering history at Greengates Junction
In 2020 we unearthed a mysterious historical artefact while excavating around Greengates junction, Bradford. The metal plaque - a large, cast iron crown - has since been estimated to be from an 18th/19th century toll bar!
We have since donated this to the Friends of Greengates community group and have offered to sand blast the artefact to clean it ahead of its display around the junction.
Traffic Management
Roads have been reduced to two lanes in all directions to enable us to progress with ongoing junction widening works. We anticipate that these traffic management measures will be in place for the foreseeable future. Please allow extra time for travel when passing through the junction.
Howard Civil Engineering have worked alongside Bradford Council to ascertain the most efficient traffic management measures to enable us to complete the junction improvement works with the highest consideration for safety of our operatives, road users and pedestrians. We apologise in advance for any disruption and delays which you may encounter as a result of these works and thank you for your continued patience and understanding.
