Balfour Beatty were awarded the Sheffield Children’s hospital as part of the Procure 21 framework. Due to the complexities of the project, Howard Civil Engineering were heavily involved throughout the life of the tender in order to identify build efficiencies and also to hit programme and cost targets. The project added two theatres and additional bed spaces for sick children who can travel from all across Yorkshire and surrounding areas.

The contract value was just over £8million and was completed in 2014.

  • Concrete-framed structure for an extension to a hospital within a very restricted site footprint, surrounded on three sides by buildings and a road on the remaining elevation
  • Heavily involved at tender and post award in the planning and temporary works schemes to facilitate the construction of this irregular building
  • Extensive underpinning operations to existing structures
  • Contiguous piled walls and capping veams to two elevations
  • Adoptable main sewer diversion through the middle of the structure
