Background

In December 2015 Hull City Council announced the appointment of BAM Construction to build a new, state-of-the-art music, events and conference centre in the city.

Leading construction company, BAM Construction Limited, was awarded the contract following a competitive tendering exercise, having demonstrated that it offered the best value in terms of quality and price.

The company, whose previous music venues included the First Direct Arena in Leeds began work immediately on Stage 1 of the project involving preliminary, pre-construction services.

Howard Civil Engineering commenced on site in December 2016 having been contracted to undertake the foundations and ground floor slab, stair and lift core, drainage and hard landscaping and street furniture. 

The last pour to the auditorium floor in July 2017 marked the end of the first phase of our works.

Added Value

Utilising a proven approach we adopted a strategy of progressing the site to finished binder course level prior to programmed steel erection date. This provided the client with significant savings to the costs he would have incurred for the provison of temporary hardstandings and the maintenance of such.

This is a strategic decision we try and influence on all projects, as it provides both programme and commercial benefits. Namely removing a significant part of the work from the end of the programme when invariably multiple trades and interfaces are encountered, and commercially it uses recoverable permanent works instead of spending budget on non recoverable temporary works. To facilitate this significant stress was put upon our ground works teams to accelerate external services and drainage ahead of programme.

Scope  

  • 1185m foul and surface water drainage up to 575mm in diameter up to 3m deep
  • Installation 425m drainage kerb or slot drain
  • Installation of 2no interceptors
  • 600m3 modular attentuation system 
  • Cropping 500no 600mm dia piles
  • 1000m3 in pile caps and ground beams
  • 2000m3 in power floated ground floor slabs
